Plant-Based  Single Origin Spice
Star Anise
Illicium verum

Star Anise is a member of the magnolia family, native to Southern China and Vietnam. This beautiful star-shaped fruit is harvested when green (before they have ripened) and sun dried. During the drying, they turn a deep, reddish brown and their characteristic aroma and flavor fully develop.

Not to be confused with anise seed, star anise has a similar anise taste; however, it is quite pungent with a licorice-like aroma. Its flavor is sweet with mildly numbing effect, and the aftertaste is fresh and agreeable.

This pretty spice has a long history of both medicinal and culinary uses in Southeast Asia. Star Anise is a prized ingredient needed by the pharmaceutical industry. This spice contains a compound called Shikimic acid, which is an essential part of anti-influenza medications around the world. Extracting and processing this acid takes an entire year, so the cost of this spice is determined mainly by the global demand for influenza medications.

Comes in our signature airtight tin, which measures 2-1/2 inches in diameter and 1-3/4 inches in height.

  • Star Anise is used in many South Asian cuisines, primarily Vietnamese and Chinese cooking,  much like bay leaves in Western kitchens. Star Anise is a dominant spice in a Chinese five-spice blend. It compliments roasted meats such as pork and duck; heightens the flavor of stewed fruits, pies, and other desserts. For those cold winter days, add a few to the pot of simmering bone broth. It also truly enhances the sweetness of pumpkins, leeks and root vegetables.

All of our Single–Origin herbs, spices, and handcrafted blends are the best way to add flavor to food for no extra calories, sugar, sodium, or other junk—which is critical to do when you're trying to lose weight or make that lifestyle shift towards wellness.

Why? It's pretty simple: Research shows that if you don't like the taste of what you eat, you're much less likely to stick to any diet, no matter how disciplined you are. Herbs and spices add a significant amount of flavor to food and can turn, for example, that piece of plain chicken or vegetable into a restaurant-worthy meal, thanks to just a little pinch and dash of herbs and spices.
